Claus Kühnl has been working as a composer and composition teacher at the Dr. Hoch's Conservatory in Frankfurt am Main since 1980, and, since 2001, also at the Frankfurt University of Music and Performing Arts.
His compositions encompasses all music genres, and have been performed at numerous international music festivals, including the Romaeuropa Festival (Rome), Melos-Ethos (Bratislava), Extasis (Geneva), and, in 2016, the Cantiere Internazionale d'Arte (Montepulciano). The Frankfurt Feste of 1991 included the première of his "musical drama in three parts": La petite Mort. A Phantasmagoria (text collage, 1988/89), as well as his ensemble piece Duplum. Musik des Lichtes und der Finsternis (1989). Claus Kühnl has won numerous awards for his work, including first prize at the Concorso Internazionale di Composizione Musicale (seconda edizione 2010), Reggio Calabria (Italy). Most of his works have been recorded for radio and television in Germany, or are available as CD recordings from various labels (e.g. WERGO, Bayer Records, Thorofon).
Claus Kühnl is a co-founder of the Mutare Ensemble, Frankfurt. Notable former students of his composition classes at the Dr. Hoch's Conservatory include: Moritz Eggert, Bernhard König, Frank Gerhardt, and Robin Hoffmann.
