The founding of the International Ensemble Modern Academy (IEMA) in summer 2003 in Frankfurt am Main is only the consequent continuation of the agendas the Ensemble Modern stands for more than 20 years: high quality, fun with playing, interdisciplinary projects and internationality. Through the intensive engagement with artists and their works, the Ensemble Modern over the last 25 years could collect a deep understanding and knowledge of 20th century music – a “memory of modern music” so to speak.
The Ensemble Modern spirit continues in the IEMA – as a lively place for learning, communicating, exchanging and rehearsing – a place for young musicians to take part in this “memory” and to profit from it in many ways.
Many education projects of the IEMA boost artistic engagement between highly qualifi ed offspring and already established musicians and persons from the world of arts and science. On the one hand this includes scholarships (to musicians, composers, sound technicians, musicologists and
conductors), further education for tutors and the organisation of master classes at festivals worldwide.
The academy also offers internationally directed symposia in order to discuss the conception of culturally interlinked and conceptual interrelations.
