Hessenberg, Kurt (1908-1994)

Kurt Hessenberg studied piano and composition at the Leipzig Conservatory. After completing his studies, he was invited to teach composition and ear training at the Dr. Hoch’s Conservatory in Frankfurt; in 1938, he began teaching at the Frankfurt Academy of Music. In 1953, he was made Professor of Composition at what later was to become the Frankfurt University of Music and Performing Arts, where he taught until 1973.

Hessenberg is well-known mainly for his sacred compositions. Among his students were the composer and conductor Hans Zender and the music scholar Peter Cahn.
