The Bockenheim Zither Circle was founded on October 4, 1886. With the exception of the two World Wars,
the Circle has been active without interruption since then. Objective of the Circle is to cultivate and promote
zither playing and zither music. The cooperation with laypersons and professional musicians is desired. Special
attention is given to training and furthering suitable young talent.
Programs are worked out in weekly rehearsals that are performed in public at the annual concerts. The
repertoire covers compositions of all styles from the Renaissance/baroque to the modern, including traditional
folkmusic. The Circle performs at concerts and functions of neighbourly associations. In 1999 it supported the
welfare concert in aid of cancer afflicted children.
In 1986 the Bockenheimer Zitherkranz 1886 Frankfurt am Main was awarded the "PRO MUSICA" plaque by
the German President for the long-standing contribution in cultivating instrumental music and thus promoting
cultural life.
The Circle consists of active, supporting and honorary members, Rehearsal rooms are located in the
Bürgertreff Bockenheim am Kurfürstenplatz/Schwälmer Straße.
