Telemann, Georg Philipp (1681-1767)

 *1681 Magdeburg - †1767 Hamburg

In 1712, Georg Philipp Telemann became city director of music in Frankfurt am Main; he was made Kapellmeister of the Barfüßerkirche, today’s Paulskirche, and, later on, also of the Katharinenkirche. Telemann was also secretary and custodian of the patrician society “Frauenstein”, who made him director of their Collegium Musicum in 1713. It was here that he first organised public concerts. Anyone who bought the libretto was allowed to attend the performance.

During his time in Frankfurt, Telemann not only composed church music, but also chamber music and occasional music. In 1721, after almost 10 years in Frankfurt, Telemann accepted a post in Hamburg.
