Project Group "Culture in the Ghetto"

The Group's concept, themes and issues
The concept of the Project Group arose in the year 1984 from the need to make culture also accessible to people in city districts, which were not reached by the established culture curriculum.

This appeared essential particularly with freely improvised music, but also with new music because entrenched reservations prevail although they are apparently not the result of own experiences and opinions.

That it is possible to counter such reservations humorously is shown by the Group's more than 20 years experience. It is also the result of the response to and the anchoring of the Project, which from individual themes has given rise to entire cycles.

From the start the Project Group has regarded its objective as to focus on socially relevant themes and interpret them in music by competent musicians.

The themes always relate to the metropolis Frankfurt: the concentration of capital and power, war in peace, the distress of refugees, alienated work - the cultural diversity serves as our projection surface. The bank metropolis is dedicated to the loving diction of the composition "la Bourse", the project "Sound cultures in the working world" and Echo Nomia 4.4. Events and jubilees can be occasions and approaches (Church day against apartheid, Reichskristallnacht). The recent past has given rise to the cycles Jazz pro Asylum, Jazz Musicians in the III. Reich, Jazz and Women (Canaille), Jazz in the GDR, Church Asylum and not lastly Jazz against Apartheid: in each case events over several days were and are developed by the Group and carried out in Frankfurt by selected artists.

The Project Group "Culture in the Ghetto" is member of LAKS Hessen e.V. - the work study group of the culture initiatives and social culture centres in Hessen.
