The first Sommerwerft Theatre Festival on the Waterfront was held at the Weseler Werft dockyards in the east of Frankfurt by "protagon e.V." (Society of Friends and Patrons of Free Theatre) in 2002.
With this festival, the society offers a platform for the free and applied arts in the public domain. In addition to street theatre and other forms of theatrical expression, experimental art performances are also part of the programme, including live music, dance and poetry.
