In 1975, Frankfurt railway enthusiasts teamed up to restore a narrow gauge locomotive. The first trial runs took place at the Bongschen milling plant in Mainflingen. In 1978, the German Rail repair shop in Nied was taken over and in 1981 the tramcar depot in Bockenheim. With the support of the City of Frankfurt am Main, work commenced in 1985 on the construction of a museum building on the Rebstock grounds. The museum now consists of two large vehicle halls and several ancillary buildings. The 1.2 km route line was completed in 1991 and its extension by a further 350m is approved.
The museum's collection includes 14 steam locomotives, 15 diesel locomotives, 1petrol locomotive, 2 accumulator locomotives, 1 compressed air locomotive, 1 railway trolley, 2 railway cycles, ca. 100 wagons, accessories and tools as well as an exhibition with documents and photos. A steam engine with passenger carriages runs every day of opening.
The Frankfurter Feldbahnmuseum e.V. is member of the Hessen Museum Association and of the German Museum Federation.
