Awarded the Binding Culture Prize in the year 2000, the Cecilia Choir is one of Germany’s oldest and most traditional oratorio choirs.
Since its foundation in 1818 by J.N. Schelble, the choir has maintained a very high level of artistic perfection for almost 200 years, thanks to the commitment of its singers. The choir is dedicated to St. Cecilia, the patron saint of ecclesiastical music. The cultivation of spiritual choral music is the focus of the choir’s concert activities, whereby one of its main contributions is the resurrection of the three major compositions by Bach. Today, the Cecilia Choir has a far-reaching repertoire, also performs on international stages (Israel, Japan, USA) and can look back on a long series of famous conductors. Guest conductors of the choir have included Wilhelm Furtwängler, Sir Georg Solti, Lorin Maazel and Kurt Masur.
