Opened in 1987, the Dommuseum presents its collection in the venerable walls of the cloisters of the Bartholomeus Cathedral. A tour of the Museum gives visitors insights into the diverse and partly dramatic history of this place of worship, once electoral and coronation place of German Kaisers.

Outstanding exhibits include some extremely valuable finds from a Late Merovingian girl's grave from the 7th century. The largest section is taken up by the rich repository of the Cathedral's treasures. They include liturgical robes for church services, silver and gold altar utensils and relics from the 14th to the 20th centuries.

Changing exhibitions can be held in the inner courtyard of the cloister. The modern works of art shown here contrast intentionally with the historic artefacts of the permanent exhibition and are always a subject for lively discussion. As complement to the Cathedral as place of contemplation, the Museum is a place of viewing and deliberation on historical events and sacral interrelationships.
