Kinothek Asta Nielsen

Founded by women film enthusiasts, film curators, film historians and theoreticians, film critics and film students, the “cinematheque” Asta Nielsen has set itself the objective of writing film history with film programmes. It thereby picks up the loose ends of the recent feminist movement in theory and practice.

However, the goal of Kinothek is not to continue prevailing film history – neither the progressive history of technology, nor the “museumizing” of film heritage, but to deal with film history as reception story that has its core in the momentary perception of the film.

Beyond specialization, film history should be accessible and once again manifest in the cinema: by thematic film series, events relating to film history and film theory and interdisciplinary research projects. The Kinothek Asta Nielsen ensures the availability of copies. It collects films in the non-commercial formats of 16 mm and Super 8, furthermore written material, catalogues, leaflets and the so-called grey literature parallel to relevant publications.
