Futura

The name »Futura« for the typeface designed by Paul Renner was proposed by Fritz Wichert, the Director of the Frankfurt Kunstschule (Art School). Futura was created upon the suggestion of the publisher Jakob Hegner, who requested Renner to design the »typeface of our times«. Renner, who taught at the Kunstschule (subsequently the Städelschule), himself stated that he was inspired to design the Futura by the »Kramer Grotesk« designed by Ferdinand Kramer. The Frankfurt typeface foundry Bauersche Giesserei published the first four cuts of the new typeface in 1928. The Futura emerged from the idea that new typography must be liberated from all conventions and possess a purely functional and constructive character. The development of the Futura marks the beginning of modern typography.
