The Deutsche Goldschmiedehaus in Hanau is the headquarters of the »Society for Goldsmith Art«, which regularly organizes exhibitions in the two spacious presentation rooms, the Goldsaal and the Silbersaal, in the field of German and international jewellery and equipment design. Situated on Altstädter markt, the Deutsche Goldschmiedehaus is one of the most outstanding historical buildings in Hanau’s old town. With the establishment of the Hanau new town in 1597, Netherlanders and Walloons settled here, among them many goldsmiths, and, in 1610, they formed a »Guild of Gold and Silversmiths«. Goldsmith art in Hanau blossomed in the second half of the 18th century. The year 1772 also saw the foundation of the »Hanau Academy of Drawing« (today the State Drawing Academy), the place of training for gold and silvermiths. Originally used as town hall, the Deutsche Goldschmiedehaus owes ist present function to the Berlin jeweller and goldsmith Ferdinand Richard Wilm (1880-1971). Already in 1932 Wilm had supported the foundation of the »Deutsche Gesellschaft für Goldschmiedekunst« in Berlin for the crafts of goldsmiths and silversmith.
