Steinhausen was an artist of many talents. Landscape and its moods were his prime interest. His portrait drawings are expressively powerful and pertinent. A sensitive interpreter of German fairy tales, delicate plant studies. Steinhausen enjoyed great respect in Frankfurt's artistic circles. He died on 5. January 1924.
The house Wolfgangstrasse 152 was part of an artists' colony, built in the eighties of the 19. century by Frankfurt architect's son Simon Ravenstein at the then outskirts of the city.
Houses 150 and 152 were foreseen from the start for Wilhelm Steinhausen and Hans Thoma, as the integrated studios testify.
Although the buildings are very similar, the Steinhausen house is characterized by the subsequently added observatory, the construction and equipping of which he thanked his benefactress Rose Livingston.
House and garden were refurbished in 1986/87 with the help of the City of Frankfurt am Main and are virtually unchanged.
On view in two rooms on the ground floor are paintings, family pictures and landscapes, in the stairway portrait studies and on the top floor the studio.
