Zipp, Friedrich (1914-1997)

*1914 Frankfurt am Main – †1997 Freiburg im Breisgau

Friedrich Zipp studied at the Dr. Hoch’s Conservatory, the University of Frankfurt, the College of Church Music and Music Education, and at the University of Berlin. Bernhard Sekles was one of the professors who taught him composition in Frankfurt. In 1938, Zipp completed his studies as an arts teacher (state examination) and also took the “A examination” in church music which qualified him as an organist and choir master. He started off as a pre-service teacher and church musician in Frankfurt; from 1947 onwards, he taught ear training and musical syntax at the Frankfurt University of Music and Performing Arts, where he was given a professorship in 1962. In addition to his academic duties and those of choirmaster and organist, he also worked for the Hessischer Rundfunk and took on freelance work as an organist and pianist. After retiring from the Music Academy, he moved to Freiburg im Breisgau.

His oeuvre as a composer comprises sacred and secular choral works as well as instrumental music; one of Zipp’s main areas of interest was the study of German traditional music.
