Gerhard Müller-Hornbach studied composition and music education at the Frankfurt University of Music and Performing Arts and also musicology at the Goethe University. He is Professor of Composition and Music Theory at the Frankfurt University of Music and Performing Arts where he co-founded the Institute of Contemporary Music (IzM) in 2005. He is also the Head of the University’s Composition Department and in charge of the Master’s Degree Programme of the International Ensemble Modern Academy (IEMA).

His oeuvre comprises compositions for solo instruments, chamber music, orchestral works, and oratorios, but also works for musical theatre, film scores, and spatial music. A recurring theme in his work is the arrangement and instrumentation of music from earlier epochs.
Gerd Müller-Hornbach has received numerous awards, such as the Rome Prize of Villa Massimo and the Vaillant Composition Award of the Bergische Biennale. In 2009, he was awarded the Cross of the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany by the German Federal President. Müller-Hornbach gives guest performances all over the world with his Mutare Ensemble of which he is the artistic director.
