MMK Museum für Moderne Kunst Frankfurt
The art scene of the City Frankfurt am Main is distinguished by institutions located along the Frankfurt Museumsufer, Germany’s key museum ensemble, which lend a truly unique character to the City.
In addition to the venerable Städel Museum and the Sculpture Collection Liebieghaus on the Mainufer of the Sachsenhausen district, a succession of outstanding museums arose in the 80s that regularly offers attractive exhibitions for an enthusiastic art public. Internationally renowned and belonging to the highlights of this museum mile are, for example, Richard Meier’s world famous construction for the Museum of Applied Art as annexe to the classical Villa Metzler, Galerie 37 of the Museum of World Cultures, the Icon Museum and MUSEUM GIERSCH. The energetic art scene is further reflected by Portikus, the exhibition hall of Städelschule, and AusstellungsHalle 1A in the Schulstrasse.
On the northern side of the Main, Museumsufer continues with the SCHIRN KUNSTHALLE, Frankfurter Kunstverein opposite in Steinerne Haus and, a few metres distant in Leinwandhaus, Caricatura – Museum for Comical Art. Directly behind this art assemblage, in the immediate vicinity of the Frankfurt Römer (City Hall), is the cultural precinct Braubachstrasse, which although 100 metres removed from the river, can be regarded as the continuation of Museumsufer. Fotografie Forum Frankfurt will shortly move to this quarter and flanked by numerous galleries the way leads to MMK – the Museum of Modern Art housed in a triangular museum building completed by Hans Hollein in 1991 and known familiarly as “Slice of Pie”. The reconstruction of the Alte Zollamt (Old Customs House) vis à vis has given rise to another exhibition hall for the museum with a smooth transition to the adjacent Haus am Dom and the Dommuseum.
