The mutare ensemble was founded in 1982 in Frankfurt am Main by a group of musicians with the idea of
creating a versatile orchestra whose form of presentation, style and membership can perform the repertoire
from solo piece to chamber symphony in intensive musical, pragmatic and thematic interpretation.
The individual members of mutare ensemble are meanwhile working in various radio symphony orchestras,
opera orchestras, as professors and lecturers at various music colleges and as freelance artists. However, they
still continue to play together under the name mutare ensemble.
One of the keynotes of the mutare ensemble was and is the works of expressionism, modern classics and the
contemporary repertoire.
The program covers premieres, portrait concerts, the combination of art and literature with music,
contemporary and experimental music theatre, performances related to concept, epoch and style.
Work repeatedly focuses, however, on the interpretation of the classic and romantic, of song compositions and
vocal works and the search for specific moments that link together various epochs across several centuries of
music history.
In recent years the ensemble has moreover implemented many interesting pan-country projects with jazz
musicians, video artists and theatre professionals. Concert activity in Germany and abroad is complemented by
radio and CD productions and scenic music theatre productions.
Artistic director of the mutare ensemble is the composer and conductor Professor Gerhard Müller-Hornbach.
