Frankfurt has a number of institutions active in the field of mathematics and natural sciences. In 1763, the physician Johann Christian Senckenberg founded his still internationally acknowledged medical-natural scientific foundation, which in 1817 resulted in the “Senckenberg Nature Research Society”. With professor Bernhard Grzimek, the famous zoologist, nature conservationist and animal film-maker, the Frankfurt Zoo became known to a wide public.
Frankfurt is also the seat of two natural sciences Max-Planck-Institutes: for brain research under the direction of Wolf Singer and biophysics, whose Director Hartmut Michel was awarded the Nobel Prize for Chemistry in 1988.
