Mathematics and Natural Sciences

Frankfurt has a number of institutions active in the field of mathematics and natural sciences. In 1763, the physician Johann Christian Senckenberg founded his still internationally acknowledged medical-natural scientific foundation, which in 1817 resulted in the “Senckenberg Nature Research Society”. With professor Bernhard Grzimek, the famous zoologist, nature conservationist and animal film-maker, the Frankfurt Zoo became known to a wide public.

Frankfurt is also the seat of two natural sciences Max-Planck-Institutes: for brain research under the direction of Wolf Singer and biophysics, whose Director Hartmut Michel was awarded the Nobel Prize for Chemistry in 1988.

Parallel to the research facilities of the University there are also numerous private institutions, corporations, foundations, societies and associations in the field of mathematics and natural sciences. An overview of addresses can be seen in the individual branches.
